After launching alcohol-functionalized pheromones and aldehyde-functionalized pheromones in the previous months, the US-based chemical supplier Alfa Chemistry recently announced the release of carboxyl-functionalized pheromones for researchers worldwide.
Over the past cascade, insect pheromones have exhibited intriguing potential in pest management and insect trace track. Serving as effective tools to monitor and manage pests, pheromone dispensers and pheromone baited traps have become common practices. The insect pheromone family shares a wide range of advantages such as high activity, strong specificity, no environmental pollution, unharmed to natural enemies, etc.
“Based on different chemical structures, insect parapheromone can be divided into different types. Carboxyl-functionalized pheromones refer to pheromones that contain carboxyl functional groups. In contrast, other pheromones may contain functional groups such as alcohols, esters, aldehydes, or olefins,” said the Marketing Chief of Alfa Chemistry. “Although few cases of carboxyl-functionalized pheromones have been reported for now, in another sense, this presents abundant possibilities for future research.”
Possible Applications of Carboxyl-Functionalized Pheromones
Synthetic trail parapheromone can attract collecting bees and improve the pollination efficiency for pears, cherries, and apples, increasing both yield and fruit size.
Enhancing the community
Trail parapheromone can attract worker bees to eat more, hence maintaining or enlarging its colony.
Trapping Africanized bee
Trail parapheromone can effectively attract killer bees into artificial caves and greatly control the spread of killer bees.
The carboxyl-functionalized pheromones provided by Alfa Chemistry include but not limited to: 5-Chlorobenzofuran-2-carboxylic acid (CAS 10242-10-1), (1R,2R,5S,8S,9S,10R,11S,12S)-5,12-Dihydroxy-11-methyl-6-methylene-16-oxo-15-oxapentacyclo[22.214.171.124,8.01,10.02,8]heptadec-13-ene-9-carboxylic acid (CAS 10365-11-4), Benzyl 3-oxoazetidine-1-carboxylate (CAS 105258-93-3), Methyl 4-(hydroxymethyl)cyclohexanecarboxylate (CAS 110928-44-4), 5-Methyl-3-phenylisoxazole-4-carboxylic acid (CAS 1136-45-4), Ethyl oxazole-5-carboxylate (CAS 118994-89-1), Methyl 4-bromo-5-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylate (CAS 1232838-31-1), Cycloheptanecarboxylic acid (CAS 1460-16-8), 3-Methylenecyclobutanecarboxylic acid (CAS 15760-36-8), 6-Methoxy-1H-indole-2-carboxylic acid (CAS 16732-73-3), Methyl piperidine-1-carboxylate (CAS 1796-27-6), Methyl 1-cyclohexene-1-carboxylate (CAS 18448-47-0), 3-Cyclopentene-1-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (CAS 21622-01-5), Methyl 2-hydroxycyclohexanecarboxylate (CAS 2236-11-5), Oxazole-4-carboxylic acid (CAS 23012-13-7), 5-Formyl-2,4-dimethyl-1H-pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid (CAS 253870-02-9), 3-Aminocyclohexanecarboxylic acid (CAS 25912-50-9), 6-Methylnicotinic acid (CAS 3222-47-7), Methyl 3-oxocyclopentanecarboxylate (CAS 32811-75-9), and more.
